Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Leader of the Senate, has announced that the National Assembly is working on legal frameworks to establish state police as part of broader efforts to address Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.
In his Easter message on Sunday, Bamidele congratulated Christians worldwide on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and urged Nigerians to reflect on Christ’s values of peace, justice, love, and hope. He emphasized that these virtues should guide both leaders and citizens in building a united and prosperous nation.
The senator condemned recent attacks in Benue and Plateau States, calling them a betrayal of the peace and love that Jesus Christ exemplified. He further revealed that the National Assembly is drafting legal structures to facilitate the creation of state police, a move seen as critical for strengthening local security and reducing reliance on federal police forces.
Bamidele also warned political actors against exploiting the country’s security and economic issues for personal or political gain, stressing that such actions only deepen national divisions. He called on all Nigerians to unite in the fight against insecurity and underdevelopment, emphasizing that Nigeria’s unity and progress should be the ultimate goal.
