Senate Expected To Pass 2022 Budget Into Law On Tuesday

The Nigerian Senate is expected to pass the 2022 budget into law on Tuesday, barring any last-minute changes.

On October 7, President Muhammadu Buhari presented the 2022 budget to the National Assembly in a joint session.

The Nigerian leader presented a total expenditure of N16.45 trillion for the federal government, but the Senate Committee on Finance cut it to N16.39 trillion.

Senator Barau Jibrin, chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, told reporters on Monday that the budget will be presented and debated at the plenary session on Tuesday.

Due to a delay from the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), he said that the budget has not been put out and evaluated.

Jibrin stated that his committee is waiting for INEC to offer details on what it needs for the general election in 2023.

The Senator, however, said that the electoral body has said it will need over N300 billion for the 2023 general election and some bye-elections in 2022.

He said: “The presentation and consideration will be tomorrow. We have been waiting for them [INEC] and they have given the detailed information of what they need.

“We are proceeding to put together our report for onward submission to the plenary tomorrow [Tuesday]. We are presenting it tomorrow and it is going to be considered tomorrow as well by the grace of God.”
