Sen. Cory Booker Launches Extended Senate Floor Speech to Protest Trump Administration

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker launched a lengthy speech on the Senate floor Monday night, vowing to speak “as long as I am physically able” in protest of President Donald Trump’s actions in office. While not a formal filibuster, the speech aims to draw attention to what Booker described as a “crisis” for the country under Trump’s leadership.

“I rise with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate,” Booker said shortly after beginning his remarks at 7:00 p.m. ET. “These are not normal times in America. And they should not be treated as such in the United States Senate.”

Although the Senate had already concluded voting for the day, Booker’s speech will keep the chamber formally open, requiring floor staff and Capitol Police to remain on duty for the duration.

A member of the Senate Democratic leadership, Booker’s remarks come amid mounting pressure on party leaders to more forcefully oppose Trump’s policies. He cited a wide range of concerns, from threats to democratic institutions to attacks on civil liberties and economic stability.

“In just 71 days, the president of the United States has inflicted so much harm on Americans’ safety, financial stability, the core foundations of our democracy, and even our shared aspirations for decency,” Booker said. “I cannot, in good conscience, remain silent.”

Though not blocking legislation or a nomination, Booker’s speech adds to a tradition of extended Senate floor addresses aimed at highlighting critical issues. In recent years, Senators Jeff Merkley (on Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch), Chris Murphy (on gun control), Rand Paul (on surveillance programs), and Ted Cruz (on the Affordable Care Act) have all staged marathon speeches.

The longest speech in Senate history remains Strom Thurmond’s 24-hour, 18-minute protest of the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
