U.S. singer and actress Selena Gomez joined her co-stars on the red carpet at the London Film Festival on Friday for the UK premiere of her Oscar-tipped film “Emilia Pérez”.
The Spanish-language musical, which was a breakout hit at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, saw Gomez and her three co-stars jointly awarded Best Actress honors. Joining Gomez in London were co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Adriana Paz, and Karla Sofía Gascón, as the film continues its momentum in the awards season race.
*Emilia Pérez* tells the story of a Mexican cartel leader, played by Gascón, who enlists high-powered lawyer Rita (Saldaña) to help fake his own death. However, the reason for wanting to leave the criminal world is unexpected—the cartel leader wishes to transition and live a new life as a woman.
The film centers on the lives of four women, including the newly-transitioned Emilia Pérez, as they each chase their own version of happiness in contemporary Mexico. Gascón, a Spanish trans actress, has already garnered buzz as a potential Best Actress contender in the upcoming awards season.
In the film, Gomez plays the drug lord’s wife, unaware of her former lover’s transformation, while Paz portrays Emilia’s new romantic interest after the transition.
All four stars walked the red carpet at the Royal Festival Hall on Friday, marking the film’s UK premiere at the London Film Festival.
