Segun Sowunmi Blasts Wike on Viral Naval Clash

Segun Sowunmi, former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, has criticised Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike for mishandling a recent confrontation with a naval officer, describing it as indicative of poor government management.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Sowunmi acknowledged Wike as “energetic, competent, and goal-driven” but said his approach was “mismanaged, excessively irritating, and garrulous,” warning that such behaviour could erode public confidence in the administration.

He noted that Wike’s confrontational style, including frequent public outbursts, embarrassed officials and undermined professional interactions with the military. Sowunmi cited advice from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, highlighting that military personnel respond only to leaders who demonstrate professionalism.

The remarks follow a viral video showing Wike confronting naval officers in Gaduwa, Abuja, over an alleged unauthorised construction linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff. Wike defended his intervention, saying officials were assaulted while performing lawful duties and emphasising that retired officers must follow due process for land allocations.

Sowunmi called on government officials to exercise professionalism and restraint in interactions with citizens and the armed forces.
