Rap mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs was sentenced Friday to more than four years in prison after being convicted in July on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.
Combs, who has already served 12 months at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, received credit for time served. He has been in custody since his September 2024 arrest.
Before sentencing, a tearful Combs addressed the court, apologizing to his victims, his children, and survivors of domestic violence while pleading for leniency.
Federal prosecutors had sought a minimum of 11 years, arguing that Combs’ crimes left victims fearful and traumatized. His defense team pressed for time served, emphasizing that the jury acquitted Combs of sex trafficking and racketeering charges.
Speaking outside the courthouse, Combs’ attorney Marc Agnifilo accused the judge of overstepping.
“What we feel happened today was that the judge acted as a 13th juror, and that he second-guessed the jury,” Agnifilo said. “The jury’s verdict was resoundingly clear. There was no sex trafficking, no racketeering — everything was consensual and between adults.”
Agnifilo said the defense’s strongest argument on appeal will be that the judge relied on coercion as a basis for a longer sentence even though the jury explicitly rejected that element.
Co-counsel Brian Steel called the outcome “a very bad day for everybody,” noting Combs is now facing nearly 50 months behind bars for conduct the jury “resolved and rejected.”
Neither lawyer answered questions about Combs’ immediate reaction or state of mind after sentencing.
Combs’ legal team said they plan to appeal the ruling, calling the sentence inconsistent with the jury’s verdict.
The sentencing marks a dramatic turn for one of the most influential figures in hip-hop, whose career has been overshadowed in recent years by mounting legal troubles.
