School Bus Crash in China’s Shandong Province Leaves 11 Dead, Including 5 Students

A school bus crashed into a crowd in China’s Shandong province, killing at least 11 people, including five students, state media reported. Several others were injured, with one person in critical condition. The bus collided with students and parents standing outside the gates of a school in Tai’an city. Authorities stated that the driver “lost control” of the vehicle and has been taken into custody as police investigate the incident. It is not yet clear if the crash was intentional.

Chinese state media confirmed the fatalities, which included six parents and five students, and stated that twelve others are in stable condition. Videos circulating on social media show people trapped under the vehicle. The tragedy occurred just days after the start of the new academic year.

Deadly traffic accidents are common in China; in July, a vehicle plowed into pedestrians in Changsha, killing eight and injuring several others.
