Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has dismissed speculations of a rift between himself and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, affirming that their relationship remains strong and respectful.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday after leading members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) on a courtesy Sallah visit to the president’s Ikoyi residence, Sanwo-Olu described President Tinubu as “a father figure” and a leader he deeply respects.
“Do you see any discord? Can’t you see that you are smiling? I’m smiling. There’s none,” Sanwo-Olu said, laughing off the rumours.
The governor addressed what he described as “needless speculations,” rebuking those fanning the flames of discord.
“There are people who believe they are more Catholic than the Pope—people crying more than the bereaved,” he added. “We are grateful that he has given us audience today.”
Tensions had reportedly simmered after President Tinubu appeared to sideline Sanwo-Olu during key events like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway inauguration and the flag-off of the Lekki Deep Seaport access road—both of which the governor was absent from. Speculation intensified following the brief impeachment of Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, which was perceived in some quarters as reflective of deeper political undercurrents.
But Sanwo-Olu’s visit and public remarks on Sunday sought to dispel any doubts. He said the GAC team used the opportunity to brief the president on developments in Lagos and convey public support for his administration.
“We told Mr. President that Nigerians are happy with the impact of his administration. The economy has made a positive bend,” Sanwo-Olu said.
On the planned June 12 protests, the governor questioned their necessity.
“What will be the basis of the protest? Give this president more time,” he stated.
The visit appears aimed at restoring calm and unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, as the party looks ahead to future national and state-level contests.
