U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Israel on Sunday morning for a high-level diplomatic visit aimed at addressing the ongoing war in Gaza, the humanitarian crisis, and broader regional security concerns.
Rubio, accompanied by his wife Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio, was welcomed at Ben Gurion Airport by U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee and his wife, Janet Huckabee. The visit comes at a critical moment as tensions escalate and international pressure mounts for a resolution to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Ahead of his departure, Rubio outlined the focus of his trip in a social media post: “My focus will be on securing the return of hostages, finding ways to make sure humanitarian aid reaches civilians, and addressing the threat posed by Hamas.” He added, “Hamas cannot continue to exist if peace in the region is the goal.”
Rubio is expected to hold a one-on-one meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to the U.S. State Department, the discussions will emphasize Washington’s priorities in the Israel-Hamas conflict, reaffirm U.S. support for Israel’s security, and explore paths toward regional stability.
Following their meeting, Rubio and Netanyahu are scheduled to visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem at 2 p.m. local time—a symbolic gesture underscoring the enduring U.S.-Israel alliance.
The talks are also expected to address Israel’s impending military operation in Gaza City, the largest urban center in the Strip. The Israeli government has ordered residents to evacuate ahead of what it described as a forceful campaign to dismantle Hamas infrastructure.
The war in Gaza has drawn international concern over civilian casualties, access to humanitarian aid, and the fate of hostages taken during Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel. Rubio’s visit signals continued U.S. engagement in the conflict as Washington balances its strategic alliance with Israel against growing calls for a ceasefire and expanded aid efforts.
The State Department has reiterated that the United States remains committed to achieving long-term peace and ensuring the safety of civilians on both sides of the conflict.
