The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has scheduled August 9, 2025, for fresh local government elections across the state.
RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), announced the date on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt. He stated that the decision follows last Friday’s Supreme Court ruling, which nullified the local government elections held on October 5, 2024.
“In exercise of the powers conferred on the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission by Section 5 of the RSIEC Law No. 2 of 2018 and all other enabling laws, the commission hereby makes the following rules and regulations: there shall be local government council elections on Saturday, 9th August 2025, in all 23 local government areas of Rivers State,” Enebeli declared.
Meanwhile, the State House of Assembly has summoned Enebeli to appear before it within 48 hours over the annulled 2024 local government elections.
During Wednesday’s plenary, presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the House warned that a warrant of arrest could be issued against the RSIEC Chairman if he fails to comply with the summons.
Additionally, the Assembly resolved to request Governor Siminalayi Fubara to submit the names of all his commissioners who were not screened by the Amaewhule-led House for approval.
