Rivers State Local Government Elections Scheduled for October 5, 2024

Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara has confirmed that local government elections are set for October 5, 2024, asserting that no legal obstacles hinder the electoral process. He encouraged political parties, candidates, and voters to remain enthusiastic as they prepare to elect new council leaders.

Governor Fubara made these remarks after inspecting the 12.5km Trans-Kalabari Road project, valued at N225.1 billion. This project aims to connect the Nkpor-Aker Road Roundabout in Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, to Bakana and other Kalabari communities via a sea-crossing overbridge. He expressed, “We are at Rumuolumeni, the project’s starting point. When we initiated this project, its importance was evident—it will connect the Tombia people to the city.” While he noted the slow progress due to difficult terrain, he emphasized that such conditions are not conducive to rapid work.

“This project is a personal priority for me and is one of my legacy achievements. I am committed to seeing it completed before the end of my tenure,” he asserted, calling for increased efficiency on the project.

During a visit to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) complex, Governor Fubara met with Commission Chairman Justice Adolphus Enebeli and other officials. He reiterated, “Our election will take place on October 5, 2024. I have been informed by RSIEC that they have an order mandating the election for that date, and security agencies are prepared to support them.” He assured that with this order, the election would proceed smoothly, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent process.

The governor also warned RSIEC staff against any rumors of planned disruptions, urging them to reconsider their actions.
