Rivers Govt Defends Vehicle Retrieval from Suspended Deputy Governor

The Rivers State Government has defended its retrieval of official vehicles from Ngozi Odu, the suspended deputy governor, describing the move as a lawful administrative procedure and not a political witch hunt.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Hector Igbikiowubo, senior special adviser on media to Ibok-Ete Ibas, the state’s sole administrator, confirmed that two Toyota Hilux vans and one Hiace bus were retrieved from Odu’s official residence. He clarified that the action was part of routine asset recovery aimed at safeguarding government property.

“The Rivers State Government has noted with dismay the deliberate misrepresentation of the lawful retrieval of these vehicles,” Igbikiowubo said. “This routine administrative action, aimed at securing government property, has been twisted by political opportunists seeking to create unnecessary tension.”

He pointed out that the vehicles had remained in Odu’s possession for more than a month after a state of emergency was declared, questioning their purpose at her premises during this period. “What legitimate purpose did these vehicles serve in the suspended deputy governor’s premises over one month after the declaration of a state of emergency?” he asked.

Igbikiowubo further emphasized that the asset recovery efforts should not be viewed as executive overreach, reiterating the government’s commitment to the prudent management of public resources. He also called on residents and political actors to exercise restraint and focus on the government’s ongoing efforts to restore stability and good governance in the state.

The incident follows significant leadership changes in Rivers State, including the suspension of all boards, parastatals, and commissions by Ibas, as well as the dismissal of political appointees installed by the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
