Reps Request That CBN Enforce Coin As Legal Money

The Nigerian House of Representatives has requested the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to make coins more widely accepted as legal money.

The resolution was passed after Muda Umar (APC-Bauchi) moved a motion in the plenary yesterday.

According to Umar’s motion, former CBN Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi reprinted N50, N20, N10, and N5 banknotes with new designs on February 28, 2007, as part of economic reforms.

He said that N1 and 50 kobo were also coined, while a new N2 coin was introduced.

Umar, on the other hand, claimed that coins seemed to vanish after a while, despite the fact that the federal government spent a lot of money to make them.

The lawmaker said that the daily business transactions of ordinary Nigerians have been significantly affected by the absence of the coins which were the lowest denominations of the country’s currency.

He expressed concern that while other countries make use of coins for their daily financial transactions, the Nigerian coins were not being fully utilized.

The House, therefore, urged the CBN to ensure that banks complied with the use of coins, and mandated its Committee on Banking and Currency to ensure compliance.
