PSG Stage Dramatic Comeback to Win First-Ever UEFA Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain made history on Wednesday night, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties to claim their first UEFA Super Cup and become the first French club to lift the trophy.

The European champions pulled off a stunning turnaround in Udine, erasing a two-goal deficit in the final minutes of normal time before holding their nerve in the shootout. Spurs, who had been on the verge of becoming the seventh English club to win the title, were left to rue a late collapse that denied manager Thomas Frank a maiden trophy in his first competitive match in charge.

Tottenham had looked destined for glory after set-piece goals from Micky van de Ven and new captain Cristian Romero put them 2-0 ahead either side of half-time. Their disciplined defensive display frustrated PSG for most of the night, with goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier standing in for the departing Gianluigi Donnarumma beaten first by Van de Ven’s close-range finish in the 39th minute, then by Romero’s header in the 48th.

But PSG refused to fold. Second-half substitutes Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos struck in the closing stages, with Ramos’s equaliser arriving just minutes from full-time to force penalties.

The shootout began badly for PSG as Vitinha missed their first effort, but the French champions were flawless thereafter. Spurs faltered when Van de Ven’s attempt was saved and Mathys Tel sent his effort wide, allowing PSG to seal a 4-3 victory from the spot.

The win marked PSG’s fifth trophy of 2025 and underscored their resilience under Luis Enrique, who made decisive tactical changes after the hour mark. For Tottenham, the performance offered promise, but the late lapse will serve as a harsh lesson as they prepare for the new season.
