President Bola Tinubu has officially signed the new minimum wage bill into law. The signing occurred in the State House Council chamber during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
The meeting was briefly suspended to allow Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other national assembly leaders to witness the event.
Last Tuesday, both the Senate and the House of Representatives swiftly passed the bill, following a request from President Tinubu. The bill, which went through its first, second, and third readings within an hour, raises Nigeria’s minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000.
The new law also stipulates that the minimum wage will be reviewed every three years. The previous minimum wage of N30,000 was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.
Before the enactment of this new law, the federal government and organized labor groups, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), held several meetings. These labor unions had previously gone on strike, advocating for a minimum wage review.
