President Tinubu Introduces Fuel Choice: N1,000/Litre for Petrol or N200 for CNG

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a new fuel option for Nigerian motorists, offering the choice between purchasing petrol at N1,000 per litre or compressed natural gas (CNG) at N200 per Standard Cubic Meter (SCM). This move is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to encourage the adoption of cleaner and more affordable energy sources.

The announcement was made during a meeting with executives of the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO) at the State House in Abuja. Tinubu highlighted his administration’s commitment to promoting CNG as a sustainable alternative to petrol, noting that incentives have been introduced to support the conversion of commercial vehicles from petrol to CNG at no cost to the owners.

“Nigerian motorists now have the option to purchase petrol at N1,000 per litre or gas at N200 per Standard Cubic Meter. Additionally, commercial motorists can convert to CNG for free under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI),” said Tinubu, as quoted by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.

President Tinubu praised NIPCO for its significant role in the energy transition, particularly in expanding Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving the government’s broader energy goals and enhancing economic growth.

Ramesh Kasangra, NIPCO’s director, expressed gratitude for the government’s support of the CNG sector and reiterated the company’s commitment to expanding CNG access nationwide. He revealed that NIPCO has already invested over N100 billion in CNG infrastructure, including pipelines and stations across the country.

The President underscored that this initiative aligns with his administration’s goal of reducing reliance on petrol while creating a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly future for Nigeria.
