President Bola Tinubu has highlighted the critical importance of digital identity in driving Nigeria’s socioeconomic development, stressing that digital public infrastructure (DPI) will transform service delivery for all citizens. This was stated at the 6th National Day of Identity 2024, organized by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in Abuja.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, President Tinubu pointed out that DPI is essential for accessing various services, including healthcare, education, financial inclusion, and social welfare. He linked the success of digital identity initiatives to his administration’s 8-point agenda, which focuses on poverty eradication, economic growth, job creation, security, and more.
In his keynote speech, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, emphasized that identity management is vital for national security and economic growth. He also announced plans to establish a Digital Travel Certificate and a centralized system to track individuals and curb crime.
Director General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, highlighted the progress made, stating that 110 million Nigerians have been enrolled in the national identity program. She stressed that DPI fosters financial inclusion and effective service delivery, supporting empowerment initiatives across the nation.
