Political Leaders React to Biden’s Decision to Drop Re-Election Bid

Political leaders on both sides are reacting to President Joe Biden’s decision to drop his re-election bid.

Biden announced his decision on Sunday following a disastrous debate with Donald Trump that raised doubts about his fitness for office just four months before the election.

Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take on Trump and encouraged his party to unite behind her.

Biden plans to serve out the remainder of his term in office, which ends at noon ET on Jan. 20, 2025.

Here is what local lawmakers and other political leaders are saying about the decision:

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer:
“Joe Biden has not only been a great president and a great legislative leader, but he is a truly amazing human being. His decision of course was not easy, but he once again put his country, his party, and our future first.”

Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY):
“Joe Biden is an American hero, a true statesman, and he’ll go down in history as one of the greatest champions of working families our nation has ever known.”

Governor Phil Murphy (D-NJ):
“Mr. President, for over 50 years of service to our grateful nation. Your time in office will be remembered as one of the most successful and impactful presidencies in American history.”

Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ-3):
“Biden will go down in history as a leader of consequence and a man who loved his country. His decision to lift up a new generation of leadership is extraordinary and one that cements his legacy.”

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ):
“I am grateful that we have a president whose patriotism and love of country drove him to run and win against demagoguery in 2020, and who now, because of that same fierce love and devotion to his fellow Americans, has decided to be the bridge to a new generation of leaders.”
