Former Borno State Governor and ex-National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff, has predicted that Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), will return to the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sheriff made the statement during an appearance on Politics Today, a political programme aired Monday on Channels Television.
Obi, who previously served as Governor of Anambra State, resigned from the PDP on May 25, 2022, citing unresolved internal issues that he said made constructive participation impossible. He joined the Labour Party two days later and went on to become its presidential flagbearer, finishing third in the 2023 presidential election behind Atiku Abubakar (PDP) and President Bola Tinubu (APC).
Sheriff, however, insisted that Obi’s journey with the PDP is far from over.
“The information available to me is that at any moment from now, Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP,” he said.
He dismissed the relevance of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has been gaining attention recently as a platform for opposition realignment.
“As far as this politics is concerned, ADC doesn’t exist. Give the party three months and it will die down,” Sheriff stated.
His comments come on the heels of a revelation by Professor Jerry Gana, a founding PDP member, who confirmed that the party is actively engaging with Obi and other prominent figures who left the party, as it repositions for 2027.
While Sheriff’s assertions add fuel to growing speculation over potential opposition realignments, the Labour Party has not issued an official response regarding Obi’s future political direction.
Peter Obi remains one of the most influential political figures in Nigeria’s contemporary opposition landscape, and any move to return to the PDP could significantly reshape the dynamics ahead of the next general elections.
