Peter Obi Calls for Swift Action as Flood Devastates Niger Community

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called on the Nigerian government to adopt proactive and sustainable measures to prevent recurring disasters, following the devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State, which has claimed hundreds of lives and submerged over 3,000 homes.

Reacting to the tragedy, Obi described the event as heartbreaking and the scale of destruction as unimaginable, with families displaced and livelihoods destroyed.

“This tragic disaster is yet another urgent call for Nigeria to reassess and significantly strengthen our disaster preparedness systems,” he said.
“We must invest in sustainable and proactive solutions that protect lives and property, particularly in vulnerable riverine communities, as the rainy season continues.”

Obi expressed solidarity with the victims, emphasizing the need for empathy, swift response, and collective support in times of crisis. He also commended the Governor of Niger State for promptly rising to the occasion and providing immediate assistance to those affected.

The former Anambra governor reiterated the need for government at all levels to prioritise long-term disaster prevention, particularly in communities prone to flooding.
