Fola Oyekunle, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has emerged winner of the Ibadan North federal constituency by-election.
Abiodun Oluwadare, the returning officer, announced the result in the early hours of today in Ibadan.
Oyekunle secured 18,404 votes to defeat Adewale Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 8,312 votes. Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) followed with 88 votes, while Olabisi Olajumoke of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) got 40 votes.
Hammed Badmus of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) came last with 18 votes.
“Oyekunle of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared winner of the election,” Oluwadare said.
On August 5, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had predicted the PDP’s victory, describing Oyekunle as “trustworthy, competent, and the best choice to represent the constituency in the House of Representatives.”
The Ibadan North seat became vacant following the death of Olaide Akinremi, a ranking APC lawmaker and chairman of the House Committee on Science and Research, who passed away on July 10.
