PDP Leaders Clash Over Akwa Ibom Executive

Fresh crisis is threatening the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of its planned National Convention in November, following a clash between the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.

The dispute arose from the reported dissolution of the Akwa Ibom State Working Committee (SWC). On Monday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary announced that the SWC had been dissolved and replaced with a 31-member caretaker committee for three months.

However, in a letter dated October 1, 2025, titled “RE: Dissolution of Akwa Ibom State Working Committee,” Anyanwu dismissed the action as illegal. He argued that no formal sitting of the National Working Committee (NWC) ever approved such a decision, stressing that the National Publicity Secretary had no authority to implement NWC resolutions.

“The State Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State stands undissolved. Please consider this letter as the rightful authority for you to continue in your duties,” Anyanwu wrote.

The conflicting positions of the party leaders have heightened tensions within the PDP, raising concerns that the internal rift could destabilise preparations for the upcoming convention.
