PDP Issues Warning Over Anti-Party Activities in Akwa Ibom

The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Debo Ologunagba, has warned members against engaging in actions capable of undermining the party’s unity or breaching its constitution.

Speaking at an interactive session with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Ologunagba reminded members that the PDP constitution forbids dual membership and any behaviour that could disrupt internal harmony.

His remarks come amid renewed tension within the party over the leadership crisis in Akwa Ibom State. The controversy followed Ologunagba’s announcement of the dissolution of the State Working Committee (SWC) and the appointment of a caretaker committee led by Igwat Umoren—a decision rejected by the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the state chairman, Aniekan Akpan. Anyanwu had declared the move “null and void.”

Defending the National Working Committee’s (NWC) decision, Ologunagba described the situation as “democracy in action.” He clarified that while the national chairman provides overall leadership and can summon meetings, the national secretary’s role is administrative, not unilateral.

Citing Section 35 of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended), Ologunagba emphasized that all party organs must operate within the law and hierarchy of authority.

On the forthcoming national convention, he assured that preparations were progressing smoothly. “Every chapter is involved, our leaders across the country are working together, and Nigerians can rest assured that on November 15–16, 2025, the convention will hold as scheduled,” he said.

Addressing the Akwa Ibom controversy, he maintained that the dissolution was valid, adding that the meeting where the decision was reached “was properly convened, with records and videos to prove it.”

Turning to national issues, Ologunagba described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Independence Day broadcast as “uninspiring and disappointing,” accusing the APC-led government of worsening economic hardship and deepening the nation’s debt crisis.

“He claimed the economy is performing well, but Nigerians are asking: which corner has the economy really turned? Is it the corner of insecurity, where violence cripples farming and production? Or the corner where parents can’t afford school fees and families live in fear of kidnappers and bandits?” he queried.

The PDP spokesman also condemned the killing of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a lawyer and journalist in Abuja, describing it as another tragic reminder of the government’s failure to protect lives and property.
