New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing allegations of strangulation and assault, according to court records.
The complaint was filed by a woman who worked as a private chef for Diggs, court documents show. The woman alleged that during a dispute on Dec. 2 over money she said Diggs owed her, he struck her across the face and attempted to choke her by placing his arm around her neck.
According to the complaint, the woman said she tried to pull Diggs’ arm away, at which point he allegedly tightened his grip and threw her onto a bed.
Diggs’ attorney, David Meier, strongly denied the allegations, saying they are false and unsubstantiated.
“Stefon Diggs categorically denies these allegations because they did not occur,” Meier said in a statement. “They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated — because they did not occur.” Meier added that the claims stem from an unresolved financial dispute between Diggs and the accuser.
The New England Patriots said Diggs has informed the organization that he denies the allegations and said the team is standing behind him.
“We support Stefon,” the Patriots said in a statement. “We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary.”
The National Football League said it is aware of the matter and has been in contact with the Patriots. No further details were provided.
Court proceedings related to the allegations are pending, and no determination has been made on the merits of the case.
