Ondo Govt. Proposes Death Penalty for Kidnappers to Tackle Rising Insecurity

The Ondo State Government has proposed the death penalty for convicted kidnappers as part of aggressive legal reforms aimed at curbing the alarming surge in kidnapping and cult-related crimes across the state.
The decision was reached during a State Executive Council meeting held in Akure and chaired by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Although the meeting took place on Wednesday, the resolution was made public on Saturday.
Addressing journalists, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Olukayode Ajulo, said the government is preparing to repeal and strengthen existing laws to reflect the growing severity of the crimes.
“Kidnapping and cultism have become major threats to public safety and order. Strengthening relevant legal frameworks would help deter such crimes and improve the overall security landscape,” Ajulo stated.
He confirmed that a bill prescribing the death sentence for convicted kidnappers would soon be transmitted to the House of Assembly. The move is expected to pass with ease, given the APC’s overwhelming majority in the state legislature.
Ajulo emphasized that the government remains focused on peace, grassroots development, and infrastructure progress, but warned that such efforts are jeopardized by escalating insecurity. Despite ongoing efforts by security forces and the Amotekun Corps, kidnapping continues to escalate, fueling public anxiety across various communities.
The proposal has reignited debate over the use of capital punishment. While Nigeria retains the death penalty, international rights groups like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch continue to call for its abolition, citing concerns about justice system integrity and deterrent value.
The Ondo State Government, however, insists that its proposed legal change is a necessary response to an urgent threat, and reflects its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and restoring public confidence in security.
