The Ogun State Government, in collaboration with the World Bank-funded Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), has launched a training program aimed at equipping automotive artisans with modern techniques for converting petrol engines to compressed natural gas (CNG).
The first phase of the initiative, which is being held in Abeokuta, involves 40 artisans who are being trained in engine conversion, CNG fuel system design, installation, and adherence to safety standards. The program, which started three months ago, also covers auto-mechatronics, auto-electrical systems, digital literacy, adult literacy, and health and safety.
Fatai Osunsanya, OGSTEP’s skills sector project manager, explained that the training is designed to enhance the artisans’ skills and improve their ability to adapt to the evolving automotive industry. Artisans from various mechanic clusters across Ogun State have been selected for this pilot program.
Lead facilitator Osokoya Babatunde emphasized that the goal of the initiative is to provide an alternative fuel option, rather than replacing petrol entirely, urging participants to apply their new skills to improve their practices and contribute to a more sustainable automotive industry.
This initiative aligns with Ogun State’s commitment to advancing the local automotive sector and supporting eco-friendly energy solutions in line with global trends.
