Former President Olusegun Obasanjo criticized Nigeria’s self-centered leadership as a major obstacle to the country’s global recognition and prosperity.
Speaking at the 2024 Leadership Empowerment International Conference in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo emphasized that ineffective leadership and a lack of knowledge among leaders hinder Nigeria’s progress.
Obasanjo urged continuous leadership and community service, regardless of age. He pinpointed self-centered leadership and a lack of understanding as critical issues, asserting that rectifying leadership would resolve other national problems.
He praised Prof. Olusesi Obateye and Prof. Van Den Berg Edward Alfred for their contributions to fostering leadership in Nigeria. Prof. Obateye lamented the shortage of quality leaders, attributing Nigeria’s underdevelopment to this issue.
Obasanjo also highlighted the necessity of agricultural self-sufficiency for Nigeria’s future. During a visit from Niger State officials, he praised Governor Mohammed Bago’s agricultural initiatives, comparing them to his own ‘Operation Feed the Nation’ policy from 1976.
He stressed that modern technology could enhance the impact of such initiatives and encouraged other states to prioritize agriculture.
Obasanjo warned of the dangers of not achieving food self-reliance and advised investment in soilless farming to prevent potential shortages of arable land.
