NYPD Unveils Expanded Security Plan for New Year’s Eve in Times Square

Security preparations are underway for New Year’s Eve in Times Square, as the New York City Police Department outlined an extensive plan to protect millions of revelers expected to gather for the midnight countdown and iconic ball drop.

City officials anticipate one of the largest crowds of the year at the “Crossroads of the World,” prompting a large-scale, layered security operation. Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch detailed the measures during a press conference Tuesday, noting that some precautions will be visible while others will not.

Officials said there will be two notable changes to security this year. First, additional officers will be stationed at entry points along Sixth and Eighth avenues to speed up initial screening. Second, the NYPD will deploy mobile teams inside the secured viewing pens to conduct secondary screenings if anything appears suspicious, including additional magnetometer checks even after attendees pass through the main entry points.

Tisch said the enhanced measures reflect lessons learned from global security trends over the past year.

“We added secondary screening based on what we’ve seen around the world, particularly in the terrorism space,” she said.

Authorities said the public should expect a heavy police presence throughout the area.

“The public should expect to see thousands of NYPD officers deployed throughout Times Square and the surrounding area,” Tisch said. She added that specialized units will be involved, including emergency service officers, K-9 teams, the bomb squad, heavy weapons teams, harbor units, helicopters, and drone teams.

According to a security assessment released, New York City remains an “aspirational target” because of the scale and visibility of the New Year’s Eve celebration. The assessment said the most significant concern involves lone actors or small groups motivated by racial, political, religious, or ideological grievances.

While authorities said there is no specific or credible threat at this time, law enforcement has been advised to remain alert for potential vehicle-ramming attacks.

Recent incidents underscore those concerns. A truck attack on New Year’s Eve last year in New Orleans killed 14 people and injured dozens more. In 2022, three NYPD officers were wounded in a machete attack in Times Square.

“We know threats are constantly evolving,” Adams said. “Even without specific intelligence, we remain vigilant, and our officers understand exactly what needs to be done.”

Festivities in Times Square are scheduled to begin around 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, with security screening required for anyone entering the viewing areas.
