Federal prosecutors in New York have issued another round of grand jury subpoenas to Mayor Eric Adams as part of an ongoing corruption investigation that has lasted nearly a year, sources say.
The latest subpoenas, reported by The New York Times, were issued last month and seek communications and documents related to the case.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment on the matter, while Mayor Adams has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
“As a former law enforcement officer, the mayor has been clear over the last nine months that he will fully cooperate with any ongoing investigation. Nothing has changed. He expects full cooperation to swiftly bring this investigation to a conclusion,” said Fabien Levy, deputy mayor for communications, in a statement provided to ABC News.
Adams acknowledged the subpoenas during a recorded interview with Eyewitness News anchor Bill Ritter for the Sunday Up Close program.
“Like previous administrations that have dealt with subpoenas, you participate and cooperate,” Adams said. “You receive the subpoena, you respond, and at the end of the day, it will show that there is no criminality here.”
According to previous reports from ABC News, the investigation partly involves whether Adams and his campaign sought illegal donations from Turkey in exchange for pressuring the fire department to expedite an inspection of the new Turkish consulate. Investigators are also examining whether Adams received upgrades on Turkish Airlines flights.
Brendan McGuire, an attorney for Adams, stated that he and another lawyer have conducted their own investigation into the areas federal prosecutors are reviewing and have concluded that the mayor did nothing wrong.
“Our investigation has included a review of campaign documents, an analysis of tens of thousands of electronic communications, and witness interviews. To be clear, we have not identified any evidence of illegal conduct by the Mayor. On the contrary, we have found extensive evidence undermining the reported theories of federal prosecution regarding the Mayor, which we have voluntarily shared with the U.S. Attorney. We continue to cooperate with the investigation and are in the process of responding to the recently issued subpoenas. We look forward to a prompt and just resolution of this investigation,” McGuire said in a statement provided to ABC News by his firm, WilmerHale.
It remains unclear what triggered the new subpoenas, how much they expand the scope of the federal investigation, or how far the probe has progressed.
