Nigerian Air Force to Enhance Capabilities with New Aircraft Acquisition

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is set to receive three out of six M-346 Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) aircraft procured by the federal government, with delivery anticipated in 2025. This initiative is part of a larger plan to acquire an additional 34 aircraft from Messrs Leonardo, an Italian aerospace company.

A delegation from the NAF, led by Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, recently met with officials from the Ministries of Defence and Finance in Italy to finalize the acquisition arrangements. According to a statement from NAF spokesman Air Commodore Olusola Akinboyewa, the meeting focused on securing 24 M-346 FGA jets and 10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters, which will complement the two helicopters already procured by the NAF.

During his visit to Leonardo’s headquarters in Rome, CAS Abubakar engaged with top executives to strengthen a long-term partnership between the NAF and the company. The team inspected the first batch of six M-346 jets, noting that three are nearing completion, and reviewed critical support systems essential for enhancing the NAF’s operational readiness.

The meeting confirmed that the first three units of the 24 M-346 aircraft for Nigeria are expected to be delivered by early 2025, with subsequent deliveries scheduled until mid-2026. Additionally, the two previously acquired AW-109 Trekkers will be supplemented by ten more helicopters, anticipated by early 2026.

Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized the need for a Programme Management Office to oversee the collaboration and ensure effective project implementation. He also called for establishing a maintenance hub in Nigeria to provide long-term support, particularly for the M-346 fleet.

As part of the visit, the Leonardo Aircraft Division showcased the M-346’s performance and advanced features through an aerial display. The M-346 is capable of conducting both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, significantly enhancing Nigeria’s air combat capabilities. The AW-109 will bolster combat support roles, including Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), tactical airlift, and Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC).

According to the CAS Command Philosophy, the acquisitions of the M-346 and Trekker are pivotal for fleet renewal and are set to transform the NAF, enhancing agility and resilience while optimizing force structure for greater operational effectiveness.
