NASS Sends Tax Reform Bills to Tinubu for Assent

The National Assembly has officially transmitted the much-anticipated tax reform bills to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for presidential assent.

This was confirmed by Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, during a press conference held Tuesday in Abuja.

The development marks a critical step in the administration’s ongoing efforts to overhaul Nigeria’s tax system. President Tinubu had initially forwarded four tax reform bills to the National Assembly in 2024 for consideration and passage. Following intense deliberations and heated debates, both chambers of the National Assembly passed the bills. The harmonised version of the legislation was adopted on May 25, 2025, paving the way for formal transmission to the executive.

Senator Adaramodu explained the careful legislative process leading to the transmission.

“Yes, the bill has now been transmitted. It is out of our hands and on its way to the executive,” he stated.

He stressed that tax-related bills require meticulous legal scrutiny, noting that both chambers’ legal departments had to ensure the proposed laws were in harmony with existing statutes before forwarding them to the President.

“It’s not a matter of two or three days. After harmonisation, the Clerk of the National Assembly prepares the final document. Only then can the Senate President and the Speaker sign off for transmission,” Adaramodu added.

The tax reform bills are part of President Tinubu’s broader economic agenda aimed at boosting revenue generation, broadening the tax base, and improving compliance while creating a more equitable system.

With the bills now on the President’s desk, the nation awaits his assent, which would pave the way for implementation by relevant government agencies.
