Napoli Beat Bologna to Claim Italian Super Cup as Neres Nets Brace

Napoli lifted the Italian Super Cup on Monday night after a convincing 2–0 victory over Bologna in the final, with Brazilian winger David Neres scoring both goals to seal the title.

The reigning Serie A champions delivered a strong performance in the Saudi Arabia–hosted showdown, as Neres opened the scoring with a superb curling effort before doubling Napoli’s advantage in the second half when Bologna were caught attempting to play out from the back.

“We came here as champions of Italy, we wanted this trophy and we showed it with a great performance,”  “We could have scored a few more goals but we are happy with the victory.” Napoli forward Matteo Politano said

The triumph marked Napoli’s third Italian Super Cup title, with Neres emerging as the standout performer of the tournament. The 28-year-old finished the competition with three goals, having also found the net in Napoli’s semi-final victory over defending champions AC Milan on Thursday.

Napoli entered the final with renewed confidence after overcoming Milan, despite having suffered back-to-back defeats against Benfica and Udinese prior to the tournament. The Partenopei dominated much of the first half and nearly took an early lead inside 10 minutes when Scott McTominay slipped a pass through to Eljif Elmas, but the Macedonian midfielder sent his one-on-one effort wide of the left post.

The Italian Super Cup, traditionally contested between the Serie A champions and Coppa Italia winners, was expanded in 2023 to a four-team format, including league and cup runners-up. The competition is contracted to be staged in Saudi Arabia until 2029.

Napoli, who currently trail Serie A leaders Inter Milan by two points, will return to league action on Sunday with an away fixture against Cremonese, while Bologna are set to host Sassuolo in their next match.
