Mayor Eric Adams Returns to Public Eye, Blasts Critics Over Absence

New York City Mayor Eric Adams made a forceful return to public duties on Thursday after a weeklong absence due to undisclosed medical testing.

His first public appearance was at a police foundation event in Lower Manhattan, where he was warmly received. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised Adams for his unwavering support of law enforcement.

“Thank you for the trust you have placed in the brave men and women of the NYPD,” Tisch said. “When people called to defund the police, you defended them. When tough but necessary policy decisions had to be made to keep our city safe, you had faith in New York’s finest to deliver.”

Later in the morning, Adams attended an interfaith breakfast at the New York Public Library, where he addressed speculation about his absence with a fiery speech.

“Who started the stupid rumor that I was stepping down? Are you out of your mind?” Adams said. “Yes, last week was a scary week for me, I won’t lie. But you’ve got to trust in God.”

He did not disclose details about his medical condition or test results but spoke for 25 minutes without notes, slamming critics while reaffirming his commitment to public safety and immigration policies.

“We will protect you and ensure you have the opportunity to thrive in this city,” he said. “But let’s be clear—this is not a safe haven for criminals. If you shoot a police officer, rape a girl, or commit violent crimes, you will not be welcome here.”

Despite ongoing scrutiny, Adams appeared to relish the moment when hundreds of clergy members at the breakfast chanted, “Four more years.”
