Manual Transmission Threatens Election Credibility, Sam Amadi Says as He Calls for Electoral Act 2026 Amendment

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Sam Amadi, has urged lawmakers to urgently amend the Electoral Act 2026, warning that a clause permitting manual transmission of election results could undermine credible polls.
Speaking on Sunday at a Citizens’ Townhall on the Electoral Act, Amadi argued that the law — signed last month — is not beyond correction. Citing Bola Tinubu’s swift reversal of the national anthem, he said legislative speed is possible when there is political will. “If the anthem could be changed in one day, this Act can still be amended,” he said.
Amadi criticised the proviso that allows manual result transmission where electronic networks fail, insisting it makes electronic transmission “optional by default” and opens the door to abuse. He warned that polling officers could hide behind vague claims of poor communication to avoid uploading results.
Calling the provision “a bad law,” Amadi said it could breed confusion and manipulation in the electoral process, urging lawmakers to delete the clause and allow Independent National Electoral Commission to regulate genuine cases of technical failure.
Backing the call, Samson Itodo, Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, said the manual transmission proviso contradicts the spirit of electoral reforms meant to curb human interference. He appealed to the National Assembly to reopen the Act and “simply delete” the clause to guarantee transparency and public trust in future elections.
