Manchester United Appoints Michael Carrick as Interim Head Coach

Manchester United has named Michael Carrick as head coach of the men’s first team until the end of the 2025/26 season, following the departure of Ruben Amorim. Carrick will take charge starting with the Manchester derby on Saturday.

The club considered both Carrick and former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before promoting the former midfielder. Carrick, a United legend, made 464 appearances for the club, winning five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and the FIFA Club World Cup. After retiring in 2018, he joined the first-team coaching staff under Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer and also served as caretaker manager. He spent two-and-a-half years as Middlesbrough’s head coach from October 2022.

Speaking on his appointment, Carrick said:
“Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour. My focus is on helping the players reach the standards we expect. There is still a lot to fight for this season, and we are ready to give the fans the performances their loyal support deserves.”

Director of football Jason Wilcox described Carrick as “an excellent coach who knows what it takes to win at Manchester United” and said he is ready to lead the team for the remainder of the season while building towards sustained success.

Carrick will be supported by Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans, and Craig Mawson. The club also thanked Darren Fletcher for his leadership during the interim period; Fletcher will continue as lead coach of the Under-18s to help develop players for the first team.

The appointment marks a new chapter for Manchester United as they aim to stabilize the season and mount a strong challenge across competitions under a club legend.
