New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Friday, holding a surprisingly cordial discussion on affordability and public safety despite months of heated public sparring.
The meeting marked the first in-person encounter between the two men, whose exchanges during Mamdani’s campaign often featured sharp criticism and stark political differences.
Afterward, Mamdani described the conversation as constructive.
“It was a productive meeting centered on our shared admiration for New York City and the urgent need to deliver affordability for New Yorkers,” Mamdani said.
He noted that the two discussed issues such as crime, rent, grocery costs, and utility prices — areas where they agreed more action is needed. Mamdani added that he appreciated the president’s time and looked forward to working toward lowering costs for residents.
