Letcher County Sheriff Shawn Stines has been charged with murder after the fatal shooting of District Judge Kevin Mullins in his chambers on Thursday, according to Kentucky State Police.
Judge Mullins, 54, was presiding over Letcher County and was shot inside the Letcher County Courthouse. Authorities were alerted to the incident shortly before 3 p.m. ET after receiving a 911 call reporting gunshots inside the courthouse.
Emergency responders found Mullins with multiple gunshot wounds, and despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.
Sheriff Stines, 43, allegedly shot Mullins following an argument inside the courthouse, though it remains unclear whether Stines used his service weapon during the altercation. He was taken into custody without resistance and has been charged with first-degree murder.
Stines is currently being held at a detention center and is cooperating with authorities, according to officials. It is not yet known if he has retained legal representation. No other injuries were reported in the incident, police said.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
