Lagos Assembly Impeaches Speaker Obasa Amid Allegations of Corruption, Financial Mismanagement

The Lagos State House of Assembly has removed its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, in a dramatic impeachment executed by 32 lawmakers. The decision, taken under heavy security, follows allegations of gross misconduct, financial impropriety, and abuse of office against Obasa, who has served as Speaker since 2015.

Obasa was accused of spending N17 billion on a gate project for the Assembly complex, a move critics have described as fraudulent and excessive. Additionally, allegations of mishandling constituency intervention funds and projects have plagued his leadership.

The impeachment comes months after an anti-corruption group petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in December 2024 to investigate Obasa and Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, over the controversial gate project and alleged financial mismanagement.

In a statement addressing the media, lawmaker Abiodun Tobun emphasized the need to safeguard the integrity of the Assembly:
“Change is inevitable. The members of this House, in exercising our constitutional right, unanimously decided that we had endured enough under the Speaker’s leadership. By removing him, we have demonstrated our commitment to Lagosians and the sanctity of this legislative body.”

Leadership Changes
Following the impeachment, former Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda of the Apapa I Constituency was sworn in as the new Speaker, while Mojeed Adebola assumed the role of Deputy Speaker. Tobun also announced the dissolution of all principal positions and standing committees in a move signaling a fresh start for the legislative arm.

Reaction from Assembly Staff and Supporters
Obasa’s impeachment has been described as a “breath of fresh air” by Assembly workers, who accused him of highhandedness and neglecting staff welfare. Workers within the complex expressed relief and optimism for a more inclusive and accountable leadership.

However, the impeachment also sparked unrest outside the Assembly. A group of men claiming allegiance to Obasa and identifying as APC youths from Agege were arrested by police for loitering around the premises. In a viral video, the men, locked in a police van, sang the “On Your Mandate” tune—a song associated with President Bola Tinubu—while pleading for food and water.

A Tumultuous End
Obasa’s impeachment marks the end of his long tenure as the Assembly’s leader and reflects growing calls for transparency and accountability in Lagos politics. With Meranda at the helm, the Assembly aims to restore its reputation and strengthen its commitment to progress for Lagosians.
