Lagos APC Questions Democratic Credentials of Obi, Atiku

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has renewed its criticism of Peter Obi and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, questioning their democratic credentials and alleging that neither has a record of commitment to Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle.

In a statement titled “Democracy Without Sacrifice: The Myth of Obi and Atiku,” the party argued that democracy is sustained through sacrifice, consistency, respect for institutions, and fidelity to the will of the people, rather than what it described as selective outrage or convenience-driven politics.

The Lagos APC claimed that a review of Nigeria’s democratic history shows that neither Obi nor Atiku played any notable role during the fight against military rule, a period marked by detention, exile, intimidation, and repression of pro-democracy activists.

According to the party, both men were conspicuously absent when others were risking their lives to defend democratic ideals and restore civil rule in the country.

“They made no sacrifices, bore no scars and took no risks in defence of democracy. Yet today, they seek to appropriate the moral capital earned by braver patriots,” the statement said.

The party insisted that genuine democratic leadership must be rooted in a proven history of sacrifice and commitment, rather than what it described as retrospective claims to democratic heroism.
