The New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) may consider realigning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if the party “mends” its ways, party leadership hinted on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference at the NNPP secretariat in Kano State, Chairman Hashim Dungurawa said former presidential candidate Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, remains open to negotiations ahead of the 2027 elections, provided the APC engages in genuine political dialogue.
Dungurawa described the recent meeting between Kwankwaso and former APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as well as subsequent contacts involving Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, as coincidental. He acknowledged intensified lobbying by the APC to win over Kwankwaso, highlighting the former governor’s political influence and noting that the ruling party has limited options to reclaim Kano State.
Addressing defections of NNPP members in the National Assembly to the APC, Dungurawa expressed regret over the losses but warned that the defectors would face challenges in adapting to their new political platform.
The NNPP affirmed its commitment to its political philosophy, stressing that it would not yield to undue pressure while leaving the door open for a strategic realignment with the APC if favourable conditions are met.
