A kerosene-laden tank exploded at Abuja’s famed Kubwa Village Market, killing five people and injuring dozens of others.
On Friday night, the incident occurred near the L.E.A Primary School, Jaji Street, and a few meters away from St Luke Catholic Church.
The bodies of the dead were removed by a joint team of officers from the Nigerian police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigerian Fire Service, among others, when the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) arrived on the scene. Officials from the fire department had put out the blaze, which had destroyed the nearby shops.
The tragic incident occurred around 7:15 p.m., according to a witness, Chima Nnamdi.
Mr. Nnamdi claimed he had counted at least five bodies so far, some of which were completely burned.
He said that several other people had been brought to Kubwa General Hospital with injuries.
He speculated that the kerosene could have been tampered with.
The kerosene seller and her two children, according to another witness named Jennifer, were also killed in the fire.
ACP Mohammed Shebe, the Kubwa Police Area Commander, who confirmed the incident, debunked the rumor that it was a bomb explosion.
Flashing a torchlight to the kerosene tank that allegedly caused the explosion he said, “You can see it yourself.”
According to him, the explosion was caused by a kerosene surface tank.
“That’s what started the fire,” he continued.
He claimed that while he couldn’t tell if the kerosene was tainted, four remains had been removed from the scene thus far.
However, Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, told NAN in a telephone interview that she had not yet been briefed on the tragic incident as of the time of filing the report.
