Kano Govt Re-arraigns Chinese National Over Murder Of His Nigerian Girlfriend

The Kano State government re-arraigns a Chinese national, Frank Geng-Quangrong, 47, before a Kano High Court yesterday for the alleged murder of his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, 22.

Frank, a resident of Railway Quarters Kano, has been charged with culpable homicide.

On October 4, 2022, the court ordered the state government to provide an interpreter for the defendant.

When the case was heard yesterday, the prosecutor, Musa Abdullahi-Lawan, who is also the attorney general of Kano State, presented Mr Guo Cumru from the Chinese Embassy to interpret English to Chinese for the defendant.

He told the court that the defendant committed the crime on September 16 in Kano’s Janbulo Quarters Gwale Local Government Area.

The prosecution alleged that on the same date at about 9 p.m the defendant stabbed Sani with a knife in her house at Janbulo Quarters Kano for undisclosed reasons.

“We are ready and intend to present five witnesses, we don’t want to take much time as the interpreter is from Abuja,” he said.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to Abdullahi-Lawan, the offence violated Section 221(b) of the Penal Code.

Mr Muhammad Umar represented the nominal complainant.

In response, Mr Muhammad Dan’azumi, the defence counsel, objected that there is no procedure for holding a brief in a criminal case.

Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji remanded the defendant in a correctional facility.

He adjourned the matter’s hearing until November 16 to November 18, 2022.
