Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has successfully secured the release of eight female inmates from the Goron-Dutse Correctional Centre by covering their fines and compensation fees. This action followed an unscheduled visit to the facility, accompanied by key government officials.
Among those freed were two pregnant women and two nursing mothers, as confirmed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
During the visit, Governor Yusuf raised concerns over the growing number of inmates awaiting trial. Of the 1,939 individuals in custody, only 382 have been convicted, while 1,536 are still awaiting trial. The Governor assured that his administration would collaborate closely with the judiciary to expedite the legal process and reduce congestion in correctional facilities across the state.
Additionally, the Governor ordered the provision of cows, foodstuffs, mattresses, blankets, and various beverages to improve the welfare of inmates.
In a related move, Governor Yusuf visited the Janguza Maximum Security Correctional Facility, where he announced plans to relocate inmates from the overcrowded Kurmawa Correctional Centre to Janguza. Expressing satisfaction with the facility’s infrastructure, the Governor called it a more conducive environment for rehabilitation.
Governor Yusuf also commended General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (Rtd.), former Minister of Interior, for his role in establishing the Janguza facility. The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to securing phased releases for inmates convicted of minor offenses while enhancing educational and vocational opportunities for those seeking rehabilitation.
