June 12: Okpebholo Urges Nigerians to Uphold Democracy, Justice, and Unity

The Executive Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has called on Nigerians both within and beyond the state to use the occasion of Democracy Day to reflect on the enduring lessons of June 12 and renew their commitment to democracy, justice, and national unity.

In a Democracy Day message released on Thursday through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, representing the sacrifices of patriotic citizens who stood firmly for democratic ideals.

“As we commemorate June 12, our Democracy Day, we are reminded of the strong resolve of Nigerians who, on that fateful day in 1993, spoke with one voice in favour of popular will,” the Governor stated.

He emphasized that the day serves as both a remembrance of Nigeria’s democratic transition and a tribute to key figures like Chief M.K.O. Abiola and others who fought for the freedoms the nation now enjoys.
“It is a day to honour the memory of Chief M.K.O. Abiola and all those who played significant roles in the struggle for the democracy we now cherish,” he added.

Governor Okpebholo urged citizens to protect the democratic gains achieved over the years by actively engaging in the governance process, holding leaders accountable, and playing their part in the state’s development.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to good governance, he spotlighted the ‘SHINE’ agenda a people-focused framework targeting growth across healthcare, education, agriculture, security, and infrastructure.

“Our administration is built on the bedrock of democratic principles and the belief that governance must be responsive to the needs and aspirations of the people,” the Governor affirmed.
“We are working tirelessly to ensure that the dividends of democracy are widely distributed, fostering an environment of peace, progress, and economic prosperity.”

He also stressed the importance of civic engagement in sustaining democracy.
“Democracy thrives on active citizen engagement. I implore you all to remain vigilant, participate meaningfully in civic responsibilities, and collectively work towards strengthening our democratic institutions,” he urged.

Governor Okpebholo concluded his message by wishing Nigerians a peaceful and reflective Democracy Day and prayed for continued peace, unity, and prosperity across Edo State and the nation.
