Joseph Boakai Takes Oath As Liberian President, Vows To Address Poverty, Corruption

Joseph Boakai was officially sworn in as Liberia’s president on Monday, marking the start of his six-year term following his electoral triumph over former football star George Weah.
Boakai, 79, secured victory in the November runoff poll with 50.64 percent of the votes, addressing an assembly that included Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo and US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
Having served as vice-president from 2006 to 2018 under Liberia’s first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Boakai faced defeat in the 2017 election against Weah.
His inauguration ceremony was attended by key figures, and he has assumed office amid expectations to address poverty, corruption, and economic challenges that persist in the nation of five million people.
Boakai’s political career spans 40 years, and his presidency comes at a critical juncture for Liberia, marked by corruption, poverty, a fragile justice system, and the aftermath of civil war and an Ebola outbreak.
He has pledged to tackle these issues, emphasizing job creation, economic improvement, institution strengthening, and anti-corruption measures.
Aligning himself with local figures, including former warlord Prince Johnson, Boakai has garnered support and nominated Jeremiah Koung as his vice-president.
Boakai faces the formidable task of living up to heightened expectations and implementing substantial changes to improve the lives of Liberians, who seek stability, economic growth, and effective governance.
The new president is under pressure to deliver on promises related to electricity, water supply, and infrastructure development to attract investment.
Despite the challenges inherited from the previous government, particularly concerning corruption and unfulfilled commitments, Boakai is expected to carve a distinct path forward.
The nation anticipates tangible actions, especially on economic improvement and the rule of law. Boakai’s ability to manage political alliances and address the multifaceted demands of his supporters will play a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of his presidency.
