All eyes will be on Alex Iwobi this weekend as the Fulham midfielder stands on the brink of history — ready to become the Nigerian with the most Premier League appearances ever.
When Fulham host Arsenal at Craven Cottage on Saturday evening, Iwobi will have the chance to make his 299th Premier League appearance, surpassing Shola Ameobi’s long-standing record of 298 games.
The 28-year-old Super Eagles star, who began his top-flight career at Arsenal before moving to Everton and later Fulham, has been one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers in England’s elite division for nearly a decade.
Iwobi’s remarkable run has seen him outlast a golden generation of Nigerian Premier League icons — including Nwankwo Kanu (273) and Yakubu Aiyegbeni (252) — with the next active challengers, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho, both now plying their trade outside England.
His upcoming milestone is made even more poetic by the opponent — Arsenal, the club where it all began. Iwobi made his Premier League debut for the Gunners in 2015 under Arsène Wenger, scoring key goals and dazzling with his flair before leaving in 2019.
For Fulham, the record-breaking appearance comes amid a solid home run — the Cottagers are unbeaten at Craven Cottage this season, taking seven points from three matches. However, they’ll be looking to bounce back after suffering back-to-back 3–1 defeats to Aston Villa and Bournemouth before the international break.
Arsenal, meanwhile, sit top of the Premier League and have been near-impenetrable defensively, winning four consecutive matches across all competitions.
Whether Fulham can halt the Gunners’ momentum remains to be seen — but for Iwobi, Saturday’s clash is already one for the history books.
