Israeli Airstrike Kills Senior Hamas Spokesperson in Northern Gaza Amid Renewed Offensive

A senior Hamas spokesperson, Abdel-Latif Al-Qanoua, was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting his tent in Jabalia, northern Gaza, according to Hamas-affiliated media on Thursday. The strike also injured multiple others.

The attack is part of a renewed Israeli military campaign following the collapse of a two-month ceasefire. Medical sources report that separate airstrikes killed at least six people in Gaza City and one in Khan Younis.

Al-Qanoua is the latest high-profile casualty among Hamas leadership. Earlier this week, Israeli forces also killed Ismail Barhoum and Salah al-Bardaweel, both senior figures in Hamas’ political bureau. According to Hamas, 11 of the group’s 20-member decision-making council have been killed since the conflict began in late 2023.

Israel resumed full-scale operations on March 18, accusing Hamas of violating the truce. At least 830 people, more than half of them women and children, have been killed in the renewed strikes, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The escalation follows Hamas’ October 7, 2023, cross-border assault, in which roughly 250 hostages were taken. The group is believed to still be holding 59 hostages.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the intensified military action, stating that Hamas had rejected proposals for extending the ceasefire. He warned that Israel may seize additional territory in Gaza if the hostages are not released.

“As long as Hamas continues to hold our people and reject ceasefire terms, our forces will act,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

The latest developments underscore the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the growing pressure on both sides to return to the negotiating table as casualties continue to mount.
