Iran has established an interim leadership council following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to Iranian state television on Sunday.

The temporary body will consist of President Masoud Pezeshkian, the head of Iran’s judiciary, and Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, who was appointed as the representative of the Guardian Council.

Under Iran’s constitution, the Guardian Council is composed of 12 members: six Islamic jurists, known as faqihs, and six Muslim legal experts specializing in various branches of law.

Pezeshkian — who sources  had been among those targeted during Saturday’s joint U.S.-Israeli strikes — appeared on state television Sunday, confirming that the interim council had begun carrying out its responsibilities in the wake of Khamenei’s death.

The formation of the council marks the first formal step in managing Iran’s political transition following the loss of its long-serving supreme leader.
