The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has called for an urgent review of Nigeria’s security strategies following a resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in the North-East and a spike in violent killings across the North-Central region.
The call was made during a joint meeting of the NSGF and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council held on Saturday in Kaduna. Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, Governor of Gombe State and Chairman of the Forum, acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing efforts in addressing insecurity but emphasized that recent developments require a fresh and more robust approach.
“These mindless acts of violence against innocent citizens remind us of the urgent need to redouble our security efforts and ensure that adequate security measures are vigorously implemented for the safety of our people,” Yahaya stated.
He extended condolences to the governments and people of Plateau, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, and Yobe States affected by the recent tragedies and underscored the need for improved coordination among federal, state, and local security agencies.
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, in his opening remarks, commended the unity and shared commitment shown by both the NSGF and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council. He noted that their ability to collaborate across ethnic and cultural lines has significantly strengthened the region’s cohesion.
“The ability of both bodies to function as united platforms has not only strengthened Northern unity but also earned the respect of the nation,” Sani said.
The meeting was attended by governors from Zamfara, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Yobe, Katsina, Jigawa, Gombe, Plateau, Taraba, Adamawa, Sokoto, and Kogi, among others. Distinguished traditional leaders, including the Sultan of Sokoto, the Emir of Zazzau, and the Etsu Nupe, were also present.
A communique detailing resolutions from the gathering is expected following the conclusion of the meeting.
