The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted claims that it plans to destroy over six million uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) from the 2015 voter registration exercise.
In a statement shared on its official X account on Sunday night, the commission described the reports as false and urged the public to disregard them.
“Our attention has been drawn to a newspaper report that the Commission is contemplating the destruction of over six million uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) going back to the 2015 voter registration. The report is incorrect. At no time did the Commission contemplate the destruction of uncollected PVCs. The public is advised to discountenance the story,” INEC stated.
Some media outlets had earlier reported that INEC was considering withdrawing and destroying uncollected PVCs that had remained unclaimed for about 10 years. They claimed the proposal was among 208 recommendations made during INEC’s review of the 2023 general elections.
INEC, however, clarified that such claims are baseless and assured the public of its commitment to transparency ahead of the 2027 elections.
